IMC is Making the Grade

The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers focused on healthcare safety, recently released the spring 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, which assigns a letter grade to nearly 3,000 U.S. general hospitals based on over 30 measures of patient safety.  

Iberia Medical Center is among those hospitals making significant progress. “I am pleased to report that as a result of our consistent strides in patient safety efforts, Iberia Medical Center has achieved a “B” ranking in the most recent spring data. Through our collective efforts, Iberia Medical Center continues to demonstrate material progress in patient safety by hardwiring processes and safety checks and balances. I believe there is always more work to be done, always an opportunity to continue being vigilant and place patient safety first.

The Leapfrog Group website HospitalSafetyGrade.org enables the public to make informed choices about where to receive care and is searchable by state, zip code or facility,” states Dionne Viator, Iberia Medical Center CEO. 

Included in the over 30 measures of patient safety used to calculate the Hospital Safety Grades are five measures of the patient experience that research has shown have a direct tie to patient safety outcomes. For example, enhanced communication with providers and about medications can lead to lower rates of hospital-acquired conditions like sepsis and blood clots, fewer surgical complications, and decreases in incidence of respiratory failure.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only rating solely focused on a hospital’s ability to protect patients from preventable errors, accidents, injuries, and infections. The grading system is fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated biannually in the fall and in the spring.
